Salter Furniture Creations designs and crafts furniture with a large range of local, imported and recycled timbers. We also enjoy creating pieces with timber sourced by our clients.

Timber is a renewable and sustainable resource which offers true beauty, strength and warmth. Detailed below are some of our more commonly used timbers, however please contact us to discuss your particular requirements.


Victorian Ash
Victorian Ash is the trade name for the mixture of Alpine Ash and Mountain Ash, the tallest trees in the world. This timber is strong, stable and moderately hard. It has a relatively consistent colour, ranging from pale pink to pale straw.

Spotted Gum
Spotted Gum is an attractive, durable and dense hardwood grown in Australian coastal regions. The word ‘spotted’ refers to the soft mottled colour caused by weathering of the outer tree as it sheds elliptical strips of bark. Colours range from pale honey to dark brown tones.

American Oak
American Oak is an imported hardwood. It ranges from pale yellow to mid-brown in colour and typically has a fine grain that is strong and visible. It is commonly crown cut to reveal its distinctive growth rings.
American White Oak

Recycled Messmate
Messmate is an Australian hardwood. It varies in colour from pale brown through to light yellow with subtle hints of peach. This recycled timber is salvaged from factories, wharves and bridges. Recycled Messmate is commonly found with ‘industrial’ features like nail and bolt holes. It also has deep gum veins and pockets which are usually filled. Recycled timbers offer and environmentally friendly material bursting with character and charm.

Wormy Chestnut
Wormy Chestnut is born deep in the forests of south eastern Australia. The trees are affected by wildfires, years of drought, insect attacks, occasional floods and winds so strong that the trees stunt their growth to cope with their environment. Each piece displays natures signature and can vary from straw to rich chocolate in colour.

Red Gum
The timber of the iconic Australian River Red Gum has a reputation for durability and strength. Its distinctive brilliant red colouring ranges from pink to deep red. It also commonly features beautiful fiddleback.
